My Letter to BC Forestry Minister Ravi Parmar 'et al'

As someone who is deeply concerned about the dangerous direction of the BC Govt & MSM vis-a-vis the perilous state of BC's globally-rare rainforest ecosystems, I wrote the following letter in support of a (Govt-promised) Biodiversity & Ecosystem Health law - via the locally-based non-profit Neighbours United.  ( Be sure to add your name to their related petition at this link:  Add your name - Defend our home - Neighbours United )  Here's my letter:

Dear Ministers Neill, Parmar and Premier Eby,

As a born & bred BCer I've been advocating for biodiversity & ecosystem protection for literally years, having learned firsthand the heart-sinking outcomes of govt. policies that blatantly ignore Science & give logging ops free rein to wipe out whole wildlife habitats with frighteningly efficient clearcutting, spraying with deadly chemicals & other last-century industrial norms that should be banned by now.

In Maple Ridge, the latest result of your govt's inaction sticks out like an open wound:  a giant clearcut adjacent to Dewdney Trunk Rd that's suddenly eliminated an entire stretch of forest - along with all its Climate-protecting/ wildlife-sustaining assets - just in time for summer (/'fire season').  Making the drive is now a torturous reminder of your govt's dereliction of duty that allowed this to happen ON YOUR WATCH..

So my worries for BC's future have only intensified, seeing the (predicted & well-warned) disastrous effects of govt's reckless doubling-down on egregious status-quo 'Talk-and-log' hypocrisy serving corporate profits over BCers' best interests AS ELECTED PUBLIC SERVANTS!

As such, you must be aware of the dangerous ongoing drought emergency across BC - directly caused & exacerbated by harmful ecocidal policies furthered by your govt.  And I shouldn't have to remind you of pre-election promises to apply the Old-growth Strategic Review report's recommendations for forestry reforms - marked 'URGENT' with good reason, i.e. per scientists' findings commissioned by your govt!  ON TOP OF good-faith election declarations to legislate Species At Risk protection within B.E.H.F. (Biodiversity & Ecosystem Health Framework)??

Reneging on these measures in favour of inaction is a huge betrayal by your govt. -  UNACCEPTABLE IN FACT!   It's as if we've been abandoned - denied decision-making rights+++ - by glib officials who openly pander to U.S./ multi-nat'l/ billionaire corporate lobbyists:  NOT what BC needs or wants!  No wonder your corrupt Conservative 'opponents' have gained undue support from gullible BCers who are understandably disappointed by your obvs. lack of caring or leadership.

The only way to make this right is to honour your intentions & prioritize B.C.'s globally-rare natural ecosystems, now & in future, by getting back to work on 'Just Transition':  finalizing legislation of BC's Species at Risk act, applying the OldGrowth Strategic Review recommendations & ratifying our urgently-needed B.E.H.F. laws = PROVEN SOLUTIONS for a thriving future.  Making deals with U.S. billionaires tied to Trump's resource-grabbing sweeps are NOT THE WAY TO MAKE CANADA STRONG!

I must also strongly suggest you put new rules in place that restrict the corrupting influence of corporate lobbyists on govt law-making, by limiting their unaccountable access to MPs' official duties.

Thank you very much,

[SaRah ChesTeRman]

HeLp me SAVE THESE SPECIAL TOADS!

(Letter to Govt)
Written with Wilderness Committee's letter-writing tool --you can write one too! --here:

my letter:

TO: Nakusp Mayor & Councillors, Premier Horgan, Minister Heyman, Minister Donaldson, Minister Beare, Mr. Andrew Weaver

RE: PLEASE PROTECT SPECIAL TOAD HABITAT!

Dear Madam/Sirs,

I was so very dismayed to learn of plans for more logging to take place at Summit Lake, home to the largest population of western toads in the world. Every summer thousands visit to watch baby toads migrate from the lake where they are born to the forest they spend their lives in. In fact the BC government once called it “one of the greatest wildlife migrations in the world”.

I recently learned that the Nakusp & Area Community Forest Company (NACFOR) has cut some core toad habitat for timber in recent years. These new cuts could easily endanger these famous toads --& I cannot stand for that to happen!

I am still reeling from this terrible news, as I am shocked you would allow this iconic species to die out due to destruction of their habitat for a one-time profit grab! This shows a very UN-CANadian disrespect of our iconic, precious native wildlife - especially in light of recent exposés on BC's ruthless & unsustainable logging policies. This obsolete attitude is the very antithesis of what we want to honour here in beautiful BC, & i find it unacceptable.

I am asking you today to please set aside a minimum of 670 hectares of this prime wildlife habitat instead of cutting it for timber. The toads rely on intact forest habitat across Highway 6 from Summit Lake, where they migrate & spend 97% of their lives: losing this unique endangered living species would be an unmitigated ecological tragedy that your decision noT to log could prevent! The Wilderness Committee of BC states:
"We ask that no more logging occurs in the 670 Ha of NACFOR’s tenure that has been research-identified as core terrestrial toad habitat. This small area is 'Species at Risk' habitat.. As of 2018 over $800,000 has already been invested to prevent toad deaths on Highway 6, which cuts off Summit Lake from adult toad forest habitat.."

Please: Let’s not waste this investment by recklessly destroying toad habitat across the highway! Many thousands of people would be utterly destroyed by such a callous, careless action..

These world-renowned toads are responsible for Toad Fest, a raging ecotourism success drawing thousands of visitors each year. This event alone can provide sustainable economic opportunity in the growing sector of ecotourism if the native toad population is preserved, being the largest of its kind for this species..

This forest is also home to wild grizzly bears, great blue herons, couer d’Alene salamanders & other species at risk. Protecting its rich biodiversity is a critical imperative, if we are to survive this global crisis let alone thrive -- which isn't likely if we keep logging the healthy forests & wilderness areas that sustain us!?

Instead of irresponsibly cutting down this forest & undermining all cherished values except the one-off sale of timber (which in my opinion would be criminal given the global state of things due to deforestation etc), Nakusp should respect its native local wildlife species & preserve their important habitat, thereby facilitating peaceful enjoyment of this favourite tourist spot for decades to come..

As the sole owner of NACFOR, Nakusp can choose not to log & instead be key conservation partners going forward: this option is preferable for everyone -- except perhaps the habitat destroyers, the logging co's that have unsustainably raped too much of BC for far too long. We cannot afford to lose more carbon-sinking forests, or drive more wild species to extinction..
Enough is enough: a climate emergency is underway, & Canada's performance so far has been shameful at best -- ie. our destructive resource-mgmt methods have contributed to this 'climate crisis' - & we must transition to liveable, sustainable methods that protect remaining healthy ecosystems from harm - for future generations at the very least..

Please do the right thing & protect these toads from unnecessary habitat destruction!

Thank you very much.

Awesome Charlotte, & thanks for the copy of my letter!  I am honoured..🐸 --& as always, i'll keep sharing & writing..

This iS THE most important work I do sooo-- I'll see all campaigns thRu.. come what may!  One thing's sure:  we're on the right side, with more people-power added daily to quash the evil dunderheads who think they'll always get by on their disinformation, lies & pollution that'll topple them all in the end, exposing their ACTUAL hold on things..

(I've no doubt it's less than we believed, & disengaging from polluters will ROLL once the tidal wave of CLEAN GREEN BETTER WAYS defeats their toxic ops -- hopefully before aLL forests are felled & extinction has set in..)

Together we wiLL make it happen!

Guess our biggest challenge is our own Govt that gets away with shirking their sworn duties to us people, in favour of pandering to the evil corporate forces that control them.  We'll prevail --we must!-- by (finally) learning from 1st Nations, our rightful leaders from the start..

Cheers!! Keep me posted please..💚

Letter to PM re. #StopKM (via 350.org)

The fight to stop the Kinder Morgan pipeline from being built is going strong as KM hurls toward their May 31st deadline to decide.  WE Cdns are cringing @ Justin Trudeau (ouR own PM!) desperately offering to bail out the Big Oil giant with billion$ of PUBLIC DOLLARS!  Disgusting.. (He's supposed to be on OUR SIDE!)

Here's what the pipeline is expected to support: (Expansion  of Tar Sands!)
Rainforest Rescue petition

THRU 350.ORG I wrote this letter to PM Trudeau:

PM Trudeau: Bailing out the Kinder Morgan pipeline = Canada's RUIN

Like many Canadians who wanted to 'Stop Harper', I was hopeful for a fresh, gReeneR way when you were elected Prime Minister.  What Canadian wasn'T excited about a platform that promised reaL action on climate change, reaL Reconciliation with First Nations & an end to fossil fuel subsidies?  Like the rest of the world, we've been waking up to the horrors humans conTinue to  inflict on our environment --& our future.  Science confirmed results of its most in-depth research on the past century of industry on the natural systems on which all life on Earth depends to live --30 years ago-- & we cannnoT aFFoRd to continue clearcutting life-sustaining forests & poisoning our air, earth & water by prevailing unsustainable means of agriculture, energy, industry, manufacturing ET AL..

We're now @ a critical crossroads --& YOU are the leader Canadians elected to take us out of the polluted darkness into the lighT:  AWAY from corporate-sponsored, unlimited (+ unlivable)  'convenience'/ 'growth'/ pollution/ profiTs/ waste.. & TOWARD livable, sustainable processes that put requisite RENEWAL/SOWING back into aLL WE REAP --before it's too late..

WE CANNOT ACCEPT that your government now wants to use biLLion$ of public dollars to build a massive climate-disturbing pipeline that supports toxic Tar-Sands expansion, withouT Indigenous consent!???

WE ARE DEPENDING ON YOU, JUSTIN TRUDEAU & Co., to act in OUR best interests & serve YOUR public as promised!  If you continue to back this destructive project, you wiLL LOSE THE RESPECT, SUPPORT & TRUST OF THE CANADIAN PUBLIC..

OUR EYES ARE OPEN:  this generation is NOT FOOLED BY YESTERDAY'S STATUS-QUO/ BIG-BIZ BS:  OUR SUSTAINABLE FUTURE STARTS NOW --by transitioning out of Climate-warming GHG-emitting processes like deforestation & fossil-fuel extraction/ use into renewable-energy innovation & reduced-footprint sustainability-- OR NEVER.. Dear Sarah,

Our efforts to stop Site C dam are having a strong impact!
“Site C isn’t a fait accompli…we’ll only decide to recommend it to cabinet if it is the best way to respond to (electricity) need. “  BC Minister of Energy, Bill Bennett, September 10, 2014,Vancouver Sun.
Clearly Minister Bennett is starting to see the light when it comes to Site C due to the information he is being presented with by a multitude of sources including you.  Last week, a consortium of interests, representing industry, valley landowners as well as municipal, regional and First Nations governments held a press conference to inform government and British Columbians that Site C is NOT in their best interests!
“It’s going to have a legacy of wealth destruction…It’s going to sap the province’s ability to raise money and borrow money;  to do other things, such as infrastructure, hospitals, schools – all the things we need to do.”  Dan Potts, former executive director of the Association of Major Power Users of BC
Let’s build on this momentum!  Let’s ensure that both the provincial and federal governments reach the right conclusion on Site C before it’s too late!
A decision on the environmental assessment for Site C is expected this fall.  We need to make sure we’re heard NOW!
Please send a letter to Premier Christy Clark and Prime Minister Stephen Harper to ensure their governments say “NO” to Site C...
Say “NO” to:
  • Wasting taxpayers’ money on a project that isn’t needed
  • Destroying over 30,000 acres of unique Peace River Valley agricultural land that can feed a million British Columbians and will replace traditional food producing lands, now drought-ridden
  • Expropriating multi-generational farm families from their homes and way of life
  • Flooding First Nations’ gravesites and significantly impacting their ability to carry out rights guaranteed in their treaty
  • Destroying over 17,000 acres of boreal forest plus wetlands, home to wildlife and migratory birds, some of which are endangered species
  • Causing the complete loss of three species of fish in the Peace River and its tributaries
  • Leaving future generations with a legacy of environmental destruction and massive debt

Letter to GovT: Please uphold the ban on Seal-Hunt products!

{i'm on a ROLL}  YOU oughta write one too -
Use this link:  HSI Letter

                                                                (from Humane Society website)

This is what i added (inside HSI's intro & ending in blue):

SUBJECT:  Please withdraw Canada's WTO challenge

Dear Decision Maker,
I am writing to express my strong opposition to Canada's request for a dispute panel to be established at the World Trade Organization in response to the European Union ban on seal product trade.
After a decade of increasingly active campaigning opposing Canada's Commercial Seal Hunt, i have come close to despair at Government's strange refusal to even acknowledge its rising swell of opposition - despite record-breaking numbers joining in the rally to 'Stop the Seal Hunt!', via numerous petitions boasting 100's of 1,000's of signatures, global high-profile celebrity appeals & involvement by virtually all large animal-welfare non-profits besides HSI:  PETA, IFAW, WSPA & many others.  I've watched wistfully as other, smaller, campaigns achieve results... cheered when the EU seal-products ban was announced... & cried tears of joy when Putin banned all seal-hunt trade in Russia.  Yet --still-- we Canadians are forced to suffer the shame of seeing our public servants (INEXPLICABLY) dig in their heels, refuse to compromise & stubbornly support the Seal 'Hunt' using lies, misinformation & misnomers via mainstream media.
On video-streaming websites like YouTube, the general public can see exactly what this appalling event is about.  If you have never seen it (& it seems that is the case), i recommend you view for yourself exactly WHO & WHAT you are supporting using OUR tax dollars, against most Canadians' wishes.  You will see why much of this footage comes with warnings of its graphic nature 'not suitable for children'.  You will see that, contrary to what you may be told, there's NOTHING noble, 'traditional' --or even HONEST-- about this supposed 'way of life' (which First Nations don't even support).
Full info @ this link:  The Cdn. Seal Hunt

NOBODY I know (including me) WANTS to watch filmed footage of the Seal 'Hunt':  the most disturbing, sadistic display of cowardly violence i have ever had the misfortune to witness.  Even if the Seal 'Hunt' WERE economically sound, sustainable & humane (which it's clearly NOT), the extreme distress inflicted so brutally would, for most Canadians, cancel out any benefits.  As with other questionable stances taken by Govt. recently, it appears we're being led away from future self-sufficiency/ sustainability, against the wishes of 86% of citizens & against our constitution (which asks us to be 'wildlife stewards') while condoning abuse of young wild seals in their own native habitat (which our constitution says must be protected) in a remote community that becomes more of a burden/drain each year...
[WE MUST DEFEND OUR WILDLIFE, NOT KILL THEM!]

PM Harper's reckless WTO challenge to the EU ban would cost Canadian taxpayers an estimated $10 million --yet another subsidy to the sealing industry stolen from the overwhelming majority of Canadians who want it to end-- just as Canada attempts to negotiate a trade deal with the European Union reportedly worth $12 billion annually to our economy.   It seems incomprehensible to risk beneficial relations with our second largest trading partner (leaders in sustainable technologies as well as our key source of ecotourism) while rushing to push through a dodgy deal (FIPPA) with an undemocratic republic (China) whose environmental record is already the world's WORST! These are not the sound moves of a well-informed government.

I implore you to consider the many benefits of upholding/ respecting EU's ban - aside from purely economic ones, which are no-brainers. We must see this ban as a blessing, an opportunity to free Canada from unnecessary dependencies & thus pave the way for modern, streamlined, sustainable technologies that don't involve destroying crucial wildlife ecosystems, disrespecting other life forms or polluting our environment.
I am asking that you immediately withdraw the WTO challenge against the EU & do everything in your power to put a final end to 'Canada's Shame', the Commercial Seal Hunt.

Sincerely,
Sarah Chesterman

RE: THE CANADIAN COMMERCIAL SEAL HUNT

Dear Prime Minister,

As a fellow university alumnus (UBC) and native of western Canada (who also loves my cats), I write to you without ego or presumption - but with the respect due my country's prime minister.  At the risk of appearing naive (having been assured this letter wouldn't reach you), I feel the need to correspond directly as (a) my federal MP is great but doesn't have the time/inclination to undertake the in-depth research I have done nor to edit all that data into a succinct letter, (b) nor does our national media, (c) your official actions in this matter are directly at odds with your public image/ stated principles, as well as with the wishes of thousands and with firsthand/ scientific evidence, suggesting the information you have is incomplete or manipulated to serve your sources' political ambitions/ interests, or both, and (d) MP's/ lobbyists who were entrusted by thousands failed to put certain legislation through in Jan. 2013 despite assurances of its inevitable success.    So I'll cut to the chase and strive for brevity by editing out all known/probable redundancy.

I've taken it upon myself to research the yearly event which your DFO Minister Gail Shea has called a "Canadian tradition", a "cull" and a "humane" activity:  the Commercial Seal Hunt. After steeling myself to spend many difficult hours over the past few years reviewing a panoply of material from a broad range of resources I feel equipped to appeal to your consideration of this letter with more objectivity than emotion.

Having undergone what feels like trauma but is merely gut response to firsthand accounts thereof - thus insignificant compared to real effects on actual participants - I must draw your attention to the regrettable reality of the Seal Hunt, which owes its continuation to your government's approval.

It is difficult to accept such approbation upon viewing firsthand documentation of this event in the form of streaming video depicting grown men out on the Atlantic ice floes (i.e. the native habitat where mother seals recover with their newborn young) proceeding to clobber defenseless, petrified seal pups using giant hooked 'hakapiks'.  What can only be described as callous and unwarranted ruthlessness relished by the perpetrators, this repugnant scene negates aLL claims that the Seal Hunt resembles a 'humane' activity in any sense of the word.

Video footage of Canada's Seal Hunt from HSI shows sealers revelling in the sickness of their own sadism, defiantly drawing out - instead of minimizing - the tortured anguish, desperation & distress of their terrified little victims - maximizing the abusiveness of their unfair advantage & openly disrespecting life's beginnings for these gentle creatures. The nightmarish sight prompts more outrage from my fellow viewers than excerpts of Holocaust death-camp scenes in WWII's aftermath (NOT taken lightly themselves).  It would be easier to believe we're witnessing clips of criminals caught in the act, or severely mentally-disturbed post-trauma patients, or a scene from some sick gore-flick, than 'ordinary' citizens carrying out an activity encouraged by the Government of Canada.  That we're expected to dislocate our innate sense of what is right & dispassionately accept something so obviously wrong engenders extreme resentment of those entrusted with our country's leadership.  Mr. Harper, what we've seen ISN"T right & I'm appalled you allow it to continue.

The eyewitness evidence sheds sinister new light on Ms. Shea's public assurances that such cruelty could conceivably be called a 'Canadian tradition'.  What was once considered necessary for surviving Canada's winters bears no resemblance to today's Seal Hunt:  a sadistic 'pastime'/sport indulging torture of baby wild animals played by degenerates/social outcasts/ violent  thugs - i.e. a senseless carnage now banned in most global markets yet supported by the federal govt.  (see this recent post:  http://liberationbc.org/blog/tag/seal-hunt/). Ms. Shea undermines the very people she claims to support in her stubborn refusal to help upgrade their community's obsolete 'industry' into a productive, sustainable operation free from harmful interference in wildlife ecosystems.

As if government's resistance to progress weren't insulting enough, Ms. Shea's defence of last year's quota of 400,000+ seals as a 'CULL' to "stop the [2-week-old?] seals from decimating cod-fishing resources" is either misinformed or a blatant lie.
In fact, young cod makes up only 3 percent of the seals’ diet. The majority of their diet actually consists of fish and squid that prey on young cod; therefore, removing the seals from the equation may actually result in more cod disappearing as predatory fish flourish. The currently low cod population is the result of poor management on the part of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.
Even the Department of Fisheries and Oceans admits the seal hunt has no positive impact on cod population, explaining that the hunt is "...not an attempt to assist in the recovery of groundfish stocks...Seals eat cod, but seals also eat other fish that prey on cod."17
http://liberationbc.org/issues/seal_hunt

Ms. Shea's ignorance makes one wonder:  why is she so desperate to condone this sickening bloodbath inflicted by yobbos terrorizing baby wildlife? Why does government keep justifying these yearly massive killing sprees at taxpayers' expense?  And HOW can you justify spending more taxpayers' money to dispute the ban on seal-hunt products (i.e. failing in your duty to our native wildlife) while importing pandas from a country with a woeful record of animal welfare abuses?  It doesn't make sense! I'm EMBARRASSED to admit I'm from Canada now, it's gross...

NO commercial, ethical or scientific argument - much less the ridiculous lies with which Ms. Shea continually undermines your government's integrity - can explain the sickening slaughter of defenseless seal pups.  As you ought to know, the international bans simply reflect contemporary society's growing awareness and must be accepted if we're to move with the times.  Rather than wastng money & resources on a dying industry, sealers ought to be provided with (or equip themselves with!?) alternatives that engender self-sufficiency as opposed to government-funded murder/ waste.  Judging from videos on sites like YouTube most sealers operate outside the limits of professionalism with offensive & unethical behaviour (if not signs of mental trauma) that degrades themselves AND all Canadians.  I cannot stay silent as long as it continues.

I beseech my country to uphold all international bans on trading in these death-skins, & to stop using taxpayers' money to challenge the EU's decision to halt this trade.  Such misuse of public office casts doubt upon your reputation as a democratic world leader.  A decisive move to end this abuse of the wildlife Canada's constitution pledges to protect would be more fitting.  Please do the right thing by allowing wildlife the benefits of being a loved & honoured native of this country:  i.e. protected & celebrated as part of what makes Canada beautiful.

Thank you.

RE: FEDERAL ASSESSMENT OF 'PROSPERITY MINE'

Dear Prime Minister,

To follow up on my letters of June 16th and July 5th regarding the Federal Assessment of Taseko Mines Ltd's proposed "Prosperity Mine" gold-copper project near Williams Lake, BC, I must ask you to reject the company's request based on recommendations submitted by the CEAA in its Summary Review of this project.

The Review concludes that the proposed mine would have ‘significant adverse environmental effects’ and ‘significant adverse cumulative impact’ on fish and bear population and habitat in the South Chilcotin region by creating rock waste and tailing impoundment areas near Williams Lake, BC. The Panel also cites 'high magnitude, long term, irreversible effect on the Tsilqhot'in' and that the 'value of the claim would be reduced substantially due to changes in the landscape'; that Taseko's proposed mitigations are 'not sufficient to compensate for loss of habitat or landscape fragmentation', in addition to negative impacts on local uses of the landscape. Since the actual effects/impacts mentioned in the Review are difficult to fully grasp by such generalized description alone, the following real-life example (below & page 2) of another, existing large gold-copper mine (Grasberg Mine in Papua – @ bottom of pg.) illustrates the shocking magnitude of the decimation Taseko has planned for this B.C. wilderness...

The following excerpts from a NY Times article about Grasberg Mine by JANE PERLEZ and RAYMOND BONNER, published in December 2005, exemplify the devastation of such effects.

[from NY Times]
"By Freeport’s own estimates, Grasberg Mine will generate an estimated six billion tons of waste before it is through - more than twice as much earth as was excavated for the Panama Canal. Much of that waste has already been dumped in the mountains surrounding the mine or down a system of rivers that descends steeply onto the island’s low-lying wetlands, close to Lorentz National Park, a pristine rainforest that has been granted special status by the United Nations…
"A perpetual worry is where to put all the mine’s waste - accumulating at a rate of some 700,000 tons a day… This year Freeport told the Indonesian government that the waste rock in the highlands, 900 feet deep in places, now covers about three square miles. Down below, nearly 90 square miles of wetlands, once one of the richest freshwater habitats in the world, are virtually buried in mine waste, called tailings, with levels of copper and sediment so high that almost all fish have disappeared, according to environment ministry documents.
'The waste, the consistency and color of wet cement, belts down the rivers, and inundates and smothers all in its path,' said Russell Dodt, an Australian civil engineer who managed the waste on the wetlands for 10 years until 2004 for Freeport.  About a third of the waste has moved into the coastal estuary, an essential breeding ground for fish, and much of that 'was ripped out to sea by the falling tide that acted like a big vacuum cleaner,' he said.
"A geologist who worked at the mine, who declined to be identified because of fear of jeopardizing future employment, said acids were already flowing into the groundwater. Bright green-colored springs could be seen spouting several miles away, he said - a tell-tale sign that the acids had leached out copper. 'That meant the acid water traveled a long way,' he said… [adding] that acids and copper from the mine were affecting the [Lorentz] park, considered a world treasure for its ecological diversity…
"Freeport says that the tailings are not toxic and that the river it uses for its waste meets Indonesian and American drinking water standards for dissolved metals… The Parametrix report shows copper levels in surface waters high enough to kill sensitive aquatic life in a short time, said Ann Maest, a geochemist who consults on mining issues…
"The amount of sediment presents another problem. Too many suspended solids in water can smother aquatic life. Indonesian law says they should not exceed 400 milligrams per liter. Freeport’s waste contained 37,500 milligrams as the river entered the lowlands, according to an environment ministry’s report in 2004, 7,500 milligrams as the river entered the Arafura Sea.
"By today, almost one billion tons of waste have been sent down the river from the copper and gold mine."

Grasberg Mine
While Grasberg mine is located on an isolated mountaintop in a remote region on the island of New Guinea, Taseko Mines Ltd's proposed location is smack in the middle of a lush, thriving wilderness in British Columbia's South Chilcotin – habitat to numerous indigenous, thriving species such as Grizzly bears, wolves, cougars, salmon and countless others, co-existing with those who live in and draw their livelihood directly from its clean environment and richly diverse ecosystems. Its freshwater lakes and rivers also make up one of the main watersheds leading into the Fraser River.

The far-reaching and irreversible damage of a gold-copper mine – gold-copper open-pit mines being one of the most environmentally devastating activities on the planet – would destroy whole ecysystems and many wildlife habitats, creating an ecological disaster. From the viewpoint of those living there – as well as those of us who spend vacations there, along with those (humans and animals) who depend upon the healthy fish habitats for survival – a worse location for such a monstrosity could not have been chosen.

I would like to add that, respecting the locale of the proposed mine is of great importance to the First Nations (Tsilhqot'in) people who have lived here for hundreds if not thousands of years – a key consideration, since it is their careful stewardship that has ensured continuation of its abundant thriving wildlife.  The region is also a world-class vacation spot, highly desired particularly by Europeans attracted to its remoteness and uniquely vast expanses of unspoilt scenery. The wilderness experiences offered by some 15-20 quality guest ranches providing one-of-a-kind authentic holidays 'away from it all' depend for their success upon the untouched nature and continued wildlife habitation of their surrounds.

Allowing a gold-copper mine to be built in this location (Teztan Biny) would therefore eliminate the livelihoods of several local residents – as well as violate the following tenets pertaining to Canadian wildlife [from Environment Canada's website]:
Excerpts from Environment Canada’s Species at Risk Act (2002, c. 29):
• "Canada’s natural heritage is an integral part of our national identity and history,
• Canadian wildlife species and ecosystems are also part of the world’s heritage…
• the roles of the aboriginal peoples of Canada and of wildlife management boards established under land claims agreements in the conservation of wildlife in this country are essential,
• all Canadians have a role to play in the conservation of wildlife in this country, including the prevention of wildlife species from becoming extirpated or extinct,
• stewardship activities contributing to the conservation of wildlife species and their habitat should be supported to prevent species from becoming at risk,
• the traditional knowledge of the aboriginal peoples of Canada should be considered in the assessment of which species may be at risk and in developing and implementing recovery measures,
• the habitat of species at risk is key to their conservation."

If I may conclude by appealing to your compassion and your fellow-feeling for those Canadians brave enough to become entrepreneurs in the tourism industry, as ambassadors and hosts, with this excerpt from an email I received from one of the guest ranch operators with whom I have been corresponding:
"Hello Sarah, ...You can certainly add us to the list of lodges, especially since we will be at the closest point about 2.5 km from the claim and operating area of the mine, it will eliminate our prime horse grazing range and tourism trails. Wiped out to say the least. We also have had a lease application over our base camp here at Beece Creek disallowed back in 2004 due to F.N. and fish concerns?! Now yesterday I read in the Tribune (June 15 issue page 4 Titled "Council of Canadian to protest ....") that BC has granted a long term lease to Taseko Mines for a project which is not only 100% against what FN stand for but wiping out an entire ecosystem with lakes creeks and rivers attached. Unbelievable! Sincerely, S.R."
Consider the anxiety with which all residents of this area await your final decision re. Taseko Mines' proposal, along with the overwhelming evidence of existing gold-copper mining operations around the world elucidating permanent damage to wildlife habitats, thriving living organisms and salmon populations of the nearby lakes as well as adjoining rivers and waterways…

Perhaps most importantly, think of the First Nations (Tsilhqot'in) people who are the oldest inhabitants here, whose stewardship has kept this land pristine. environmentally sound, self-sustaining and teeming with diversity for centuries.  Theirs is ultimately the legacy worth leaving here in B.C., a province I am proud to defend from the harm, greed and selfishness which Taseko's 'Prosperity Mine' epitomizes…

Please send us, your British Columbian friends, some of your capital goodwill by rejecting Taseko Mines Ltd.'s hostile proposal to decimate a B.C. wilderness and sacred Tsilhqot'in Nation territory.  Gold-copper mining is an ecological disaster; please don't let B.C. become one too! Thank you so much.

Sincerely,

Sarah Chesterman

RE: SPECIAL URGENT REQUEST TO PLEASE CONSIDER THIS LETTER IN YOUR JULY 2nd FEDERAL ASSESSMENT OF TASEKO MINES LTD's 'PROSPERITY MINE'

Dear Prime Minister,

I write this letter with unwavering dedication to my obligations as a concerned Canadian citizen – born and raised in Vancouver – to contribute to the wellbeing of my province and country, and as such respectfully request your consideration of the critical information contained herein to use in your Assessment of Taseko Mines Ltd.'s “Prosperity Mine” project currently under federal review.  The imminent decision to be made by your review board on July 2nd is a date awaited with extreme anxiety by those who would be most closely affected, who are dreading its approval.

This open-pit Copper/Gold Mine Taseko Mines Ltd. proposes to build in the Nemaiah Valley in B.C.’s Cariboo/Chilcotin region would have extremely significant environmental effects, contrary to Taseko's final submission. Included here are examples of existing, comparable mines illustrating the extent of these effects and demonstrating with shocking clarity their catastrophic consequences – not only for the British Columbians who currently live in and draw their livelihood from this part of BC’s Chilcotin region, but also for its complex ecosystems and the many wildlife species that depend upon them for survival, and for BC as a whole in terms of its fishing and tourism industries and its water supplies.

THE NEMAIAH VALLEY
Taseko’s proposed location is a special land, where spawning salmon make their incredible 300-km journey up the Fraser and Chilcotin Rivers to Chilko Lake. Fish Lake and Little Fish Lake (Nabas) sit at the headwaters of the Taseko River and ultimately the Fraser River, 600 km north of Vancouver, BC. In late July to early August visitors can witness the phenomena of the spawning Chinook and Sockeye salmon in Beece Creek and the Taseko River.

It is a beautiful unspoilt wilderness, home to wide variety of wildlife. Bighorn Sheep, grizzly and black bears, deer, mountain lion and wild horses are just some of the area's inhabitants. The many bird species include Bald and Golden Eagles, Osprey and Blue Heron, to name a few.

The territory has been home to the Tsilhqot’in First Nations tribe for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. The area's unspoilt beauty is testament to their responsible stewardship of the land. In recent years, they have been developing an impressive ecosystem-based forest management model, an Access Management Plan, and eco-tourism initiatives that include cultural experiences and wildlife viewing. They have declared much of their territory a protected area, designating it the Aboriginal Wilderness Preserve (1989) and the Elegesi Qayus Wild Horse Preserve (2002).

Also situated in this valley are a number of high-end guest ranches, spa retreats and working ranches whose owners, in harmony with their First Nations co-habitants, have carefully & responsibly managed the land on which they live and conduct their activities in sustainable, non-disruptive ways that ensure thriving ecosystems – for present and for future generations.

This area of British Columbia attracts tourists from all over the world seeking to experience its vast expanses of treed wilderness, lakes and "escape"-style getaways full of exciting wildlife viewing with a stellar --and growing-- selection of world-class guest ranches/ resorts. The first time I visited Nemaiah Valley, in my early twenties driving a '71 Chevy Malibu bought with $750 cash dollars and accompanied by my best friend, was a week's summer stay at a guest ranch deep in the quiet valley, with its own pristine lake and miles of trails through forests and mountains.  The trip is vividly imprinted in my memory -- transported to a magical escape in a largely unspoiled paradise where Nature took over and transported me on a wave of freedom and oneness with Earth's every magical lifeform..To this day, no other place has held such allure, or inspired such awe.  It was delicious. Other ranch guests would express similar sentiments, explaining their third visit from Germany or elsewhere. The uniqueness of being in these wide-open spaces is hard to convey, but it is exactly the essence that makes a place unforgettable: the enchantment of being outdoors in the Valley's hushed presence just before sunset, when heady summer scents waft your way as you gaze up at loomiing Mount Tatlow.. or the flush of catching sight of a wild horse shyly watching you through the trees on a horseback ride in the woods.. or putting down your oars in the middle of an impossibly clear, deep blue lake just to hear the hush of a precious solitude you longed would last:  the kind of unique experience only found in BC, apparently..

It is indeed hard to believe that BC's own provincial government has given approval for Taseko Mines Ltd. to proceed with this project – which by necessity would also require them to level entire forests, drain 2 rich trout-fishing lakes which would create permanent loss of fish habitat as well as terrestrial habitat for grizzly bears, put a permanent environmental liability into the tributary of the Taseko and Fraser Rivers, eliminate cultural sites dating to at least 5,500 years ago, create an open pit 800 m. deep and 1600 m. in diameter, and create 858 million tonnes of tailings and 358 million tons of waste rock – and, of course, destroy homes and lives and a wilderness lodge industry that requires miles of untouched wilderness to function and thrive..

Their approval – besides having been given without proper assessment or consultation – is in fact diametrically opposed to this same provincial government's Tourism Action Plan (2007):

[from http://www.tca.gov.bc.ca/tourism/docs/tourism_action_plan.pdf] :

PROVINCE OF BRITISH COLUMBIA’S TOURISM ACTION PLAN (February 2007)

“Tourism remains one of our strongest strategic building blocks, and a huge strategic advantage for every region of the province.  B.C. has the world’s most spectacular places, diverse cultures, amenities and landscapes and amazing resorts. We want to work with the tourism industry to ensure we provide funding in the most eff ective way possible to double tourism revenues, and to make sure communities across B.C. can achieve their full tourism potential.”
- Premier Gordon Campbell, September 2004

Also from the above website, in a list itemizing BC govt’s planned tourism actions:

“…promoting and marketing the province of British Columbia as a premiere destination, showcasing and leveraging the 2010 Games and B.C.’s attractive physical environment; Simply put, the tourism sector will increase the number of tourists and the length of their stay; government will ensure that appropriate regulatory and economic climates are in place, as well as provide planning, coordination, and infrastructure investments, to help the tourism industry meet that goal.”

WILDLIFE HABITAT - EXCERPTS FROM GOVT. OF CANADA WEBSITE:

Wildlife Habitat
"Environment Canada is committed to preserving wilderness areas that support healthy and diverse wildlife populations. It oversees a network of protected areas covering 11.8 million hectares of wildlife habitat – an area twice the size of Nova Scotia."

Habitat Conservation
“Habitat loss and degradation are perhaps the most important pressures facing wildlife today. The Canadian Wildlife Service (CWS) of Environment Canada considers habitat protection vital to conserving wildlife and is making efforts to preserve the remaining wilderness areas that support healthy and diverse wildlife populations. Efforts are also focused on creating and protecting wildlife areas where habitat losses have been greatest. The protection and wise use of Canada’s wildlife habitat are a joint responsibility, shared by governments, non-government organizations, the public, Aboriginal groups, and the private sector.”

Excerpt from Environment Canada’s Species at Risk Act (2002, c. 29)
 - Canada’s natural heritage is an integral part of our national identity and history,
Canadian wildlife species and ecosystems are also part of the world’s heritage and the Government of Canada has ratified the United Nations Convention on the Conservation of Biological Diversity,
 - the roles of the aboriginal peoples of Canada and of wildlife management boards established under land claims agreements in the conservation of wildlife in this country are essential,
 - all Canadians have a role to play in the conservation of wildlife in this country, including the prevention of wildlife species from becoming extirpated or extinct,
 - stewardship activities contributing to the conservation of wildlife species and their habitat should be supported to prevent species from becoming at risk,
 - the traditional knowledge of the aboriginal peoples of Canada should be considered in the assessment of which species may be at risk and in developing and implementing recovery measures,
 - knowledge of wildlife species and ecosystems is critical to their conservation,
the habitat of species at risk is key to their conservation,
 - Wildlife, in all its forms, has value in and of itself and is valued by Canadians for aesthetic, cultural, spiritual, recreational, educational, historical, economic, medical, ecological and scientific reasons"

[from www.fonv.ca]:
"In British Columbia the Chilcotin holds the last major numbers of wild horses. Communication from a recent range manager for the Ministry of Forests in Alexis Creek, King Campbell, indicates that there are about 400, including 75 in the Brittany triangle. The M.O.F. say they conduct a fly over every February to determine these numbers. Personal experience (David Williams) and conversations with local guide outfitters and Xeni Gwet’in First Nation members indicate that there are probably closer to 100 in the B.T. and possibly twice that number. All indications are that their numbers are very slowly increasing or are stable at present. Milder winters over the past few years may have contributed to a slight recent increase in some areas. Nevertheless, this appears to be an intact ecosystem in a state of balance without undue competition between species which share habitat requirements."

"DETRIMENTAL ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS THAT CANNOT BE MITIGATED"

From a letter dated October 2008 from Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) addressed to Garry Alexander (EAO) re. comments on the Prosperity Project:
"NRCan Rationale:
The flooded pit could represent a long-term source of ARD/ML contamination for the lower Fish Creek watershed. Of particular concern is the potential for geochemical stratification within the pit, with eutrophication and seasonal turnovers that could cause a sudden deterioration of outflow quality."

COST OF GOLD - THE HIDDEN PAYROLL:
BELOW A MOUNTAIN OF WEALTH, A RIVER OF WASTE

The following are excerpts from a lengthy NY Times article about Grasberg Mine by JANE PERLEZ and RAYMOND BONNER, published: December 27, 2005:

“By Freeport’s own estimates, Grasberg Mine will generate an estimated six billion tons of waste before it is through - more than twice as much earth as was excavated for the Panama Canal. Much of that waste has already been dumped in the mountains surrounding the mine or down a system of rivers that descends steeply onto the island’s low-lying wetlands, close to Lorentz National Park, a pristine rain forest that has been granted special status by the United Nations.

“… A perpetual worry is where to put all the mine’s waste - accumulating at a rate of some 700,000 tons a day… The danger is that the waste rock atop the mountain will trickle out acids into the honeycomb of caverns and caves beneath the mine in a wet climate that gets up to 12 feet of rain a year, say environmental experts who have worked at the mine.

“This year Freeport told the Indonesian government that the waste rock in the highlands, 900 feet deep in places, now covers about three square miles.  Down below, nearly 90 square miles of wetlands, once one of the richest freshwater habitats in the world, are virtually buried in mine waste, called tailings, with levels of copper and sediment so high that almost all fish have disappeared, according to environment ministry documents.

"The waste, the consistency and color of wet cement, belts down the rivers, and inundates and smothers all in its path, said Russell Dodt, an Australian civil engineer who managed the waste on the wetlands for 10 years until 2004 for Freeport. About a third of the waste has moved into the coastal estuary, an essential breeding ground for fish, and much of that 'was ripped out to sea by the falling tide that acted like a big vacuum cleaner,' he said.

“A geologist who worked at the mine, who declined to be identified because of fear of jeopardizing future employment, said acids were already flowing into the groundwater. Bright green-colored springs could be seen spouting several miles away, he said, a tell-tale sign that the acids had leached out copper. 'That meant the acid water traveled a long way,' he said.

"Freeport says that the springs are 'located several miles from our operations, in the Lorentz World Heritage site, and are not associated with our operations.' The geologist agreed that the springs probably were in the Lorentz park, and said this showed that acids and copper from the mine were affecting the park, considered a world treasure for its ecological diversity.

“Freeport says that the tailings are not toxic and that the river it uses for its waste meets Indonesian and American drinking water standards for dissolved metals. The coastal estuary, it says, is a 'functioning ecosystem'. The Parametrix report shows copper levels in surface waters high enough to kill sensitive aquatic life in a short time, said Ann Maest, a geochemist who consults on mining issues. The report showed that nearly half of the sediment samples in parts of the coastal estuary were toxic to the sensitive aquatic organisms at the bottom of the food chain, she said.

"By today, almost one billion tons of waste have been sent down the river from Grasberg Mine."

TASEKO MINES LTD.: A DIVISION OF HUNTER DICKINSON

The following article [from www.asianews.it] outlines some effects of other projects by Hunter Dickinson, the same company that owns Taseko Mines Ltd. and is proposing Prosperity Mine:

TIBET SLAMS INDISCRIMINATE CANADA-BASED MINING IN CHINA

"Dharamsala (AsiaNews) – Tibetans and their supporters staged a die-in protest in Dharamshala (India) yesterday to protest mining in Tibet by Continental Minerals, a subsidiary of Canada-based Hunter Dickinson.

"The action is a part of a global campaign demanding that the company immediately cease all mining operations at Shethongmon [Xietongmen]. The development of Tibet’s mineral riches is undermining its fragile environment and polluting water sources on which 47 per cent of humanity depends.

“'Under Chinese occupation, Tibetans are denied the internationally recognised right to determine the use of their own land and resources," said Tenzin Choedon, program director of Students for a Free Tibet-India (SFT-India). "Depleting Tibet’s mineral wealth in favour of China represents a danger to the country’s fragile ecology because of the destruction of vast unpopulated areas and the pollution of key water sources."

"Ten major river systems... have their source in Tibet. Most mining sites are located near these major rivers and their tributaries. Chemicals from mining are released into these rivers, where they poison the water.  Almost 47 per cent of the world's population depend on the water sourced from the Tibet plateau, and three of our [India’s] major rivers come from Tibet," said Kirti Kapoor, a student from Delhi University and a member of SFT-India. "The Chinese government and foreign mining companies could destroy not only Tibet’s fragile environment but also the lifeline of almost half of the world's population."

I trust the preceding provides your Federal Review Board with some valuable (/hitherto unexamined) illuminating information to aid in its decision as to whether Prosperity Mine should be permitted to proceed.  In summary I ask that decision-makers, above all, carefully consider this project's effects on those who have built their lives in the same area as Prosperity Mine's planned location -- as well as to weigh very seriously on the inevitable risks to the native wildlife species / salmon runs whose habitats depend upon the healthy ecosystems / waterways that Prosperity Mine would irreparably harm (esp. the important watershed leading into the Fraser River) – along with examples of other comparable mining operations around the world, all of which add ample evidence of the devastating environmental impacts of open-pit gold/copper mining in general, and of the relatively more massive 'Prosperity Mine' in particular – effects so obviously extreme that NO amount of mitigation could possibly succeed in (or come close to) preventing / reversing their harms.

Thank you for taking the time to read my heartfelt and studiously researched points relevant to wide-ranging aspects of this Prosperity Mine proposal under review, and for including this document as my official public submission to the Federal government's environmental assessment thereof.

Sincerely,

SARAH CHESTERMAN
