BC needs to REJECT Tilbury LNG!

In case you haven't heard, the BC govt. is considering a proposal by FortisBC to build new expanded LNG infrastructure @ Tilbury LNG -- another fraught political megaproject that promises increased shipping for the fracked gas along with risky methane emissions & outsize GHGs, as well as exacerbated Climate imbalance -- right between densely populated Richmond & Vancouver, on the Fraser River's threatened habitat of our last few orca & salmon populations.  While the public commenting period is over, the govt's decision is delayed -- so you can still express your opposition to this disastrous project thru StandEarth's letter page.. Here's my own edited letter -- unapologetically lengthy!  Cuz this BC govt needs to WAKE out of its corporate-captured fog & realize exactly what's being proposed by Tilbury LNG..

Dear {contact_data~salutation}{contact_data~lastName},

As a B.C. resident I am appalled that you & your government continue to ignore the overwhelming mass of evidence of the disastrous impacts that will -- not might -- result from approving the Tilbury LNG expansion project, for which this new tanker dock ('Jetty') awaits your immediate permission to ruin BC's future.

How is it that, having received reams of detailed expert opposition to this project's undeniable harms, your govt has not already rejected this proposal & denied FortisBC permits to build another ecocidal monument to climate catastrophe? 

I am tempted to reassert here -- again -- Tilbury LNG's significant cumulative effects & fundamental flaws (including:  Project splitting, Failure to address GHG targets, Methane emissions 86X deadlier than C02, Economic viability incl. dearth of data thereof, Marine shipping impacts incl. likely extinction of southern resident killer whales & salmon populations, Impacts on Indigenous rights & title incl. non-adherence to UNDRIP...) but blah blah right?  You've already read -- & apparently decided to ignore -- the numerous persuasive public comments detailing these ills, including my own posted input, on your govt.'s Tilbury LNG web page.

No, it's clear what you need to read -- not reported by our captured corporate media -- addresses your govt's baseless hopes that future LNG sales will justify BC's expanded natural gas production... & your repeated claims -- echoed by PM Justin Trudeau -- that BC produces “the world’s cleanest natural gas.”

The fiction of BC producing clean fossil fuel originated with Premier Christy Clark’s Liberals -- a claim as dishonest as the one about LNG rewarding the province with one trillion dollars in a “BC Prosperity fund.”  I.E. irrefutably FALSE...

National Geographic examined “the cleanest liquefied natural gas in the world” & concluded it was a hypothetical notion repeatedly promised by political leaders to build public support for the fossil fuel.. Quoted here:

"There’s no such thing as “clean natural gas.” It’s a fossil fuel, and it releases climate-disrupting greenhouse gases all the way up and down the chain of production, from the wellhead to the burners on your stovetop or in your furnace.

"This is especially true for LNG. In order to ship it, energy companies must first chill the gas to -160°C (-256°F) in giant coastal plants that are essentially industrial-size freezers. The process consumes vast quantities of energy. After it’s shipped across the sea, companies then return the LNG to its gaseous state before shipping it off to customers.

"Because of these extra steps, LNG carries a whopper of an energy and carbon footprint compared to unadulterated natural gas." [End National Geographic quote]

Both natural gas producers & transportation companies conceal the true climate impact of LNG. The New York Times reported that shipping produces as much C02 as all of America’s coal plants combined. The newspaper explained why regulation of shipping emissions by the powerful International Maritime Organization (IMO) is so ineffective:

"The I.M.O. is a regulatory body that is run in concert with the industry it regulates. Shipbuilders, oil companies, miners, chemical manufacturers and others with huge financial stakes in commercial shipping are among the delegates appointed by many member nations. They sometimes even speak on behalf of governments…

"Next week, the organization is scheduled to enact its first greenhouse gas rules since Paris — regulations that do not cut emissions, have no enforcement mechanism and leave key details shrouded in secrecy…

"Although some suggest LNG powered ships could moderate transportation harm, the International Council on Clean Transportation determined there is no climate benefit from tankers burning LNG, regardless of ship engine technology." [End New York Times quote]

The Natural Resources Defense Council states:

"Historically, gas has been considered a “bridge fuel”— cleaner and with lower carbon dioxide emissions than coal or oil— and a potential tool to help address climate change.

"However, LNG is neither clean nor particularly low in emissions. In addition, the massive investments in new infrastructure to support this industry, including pipelines, liquefaction facilities, export terminals, and tankers, lock in fossil fuel dependence, making the transition to actual low-carbon and no-carbon energy even more difficult.

"Our analysis shows that using LNG to replace other, dirtier fossil fuels, is not an effective strategy to reduce climate-warming emissions..." [End NRDC quote]

Your govt. is therefore considering inflicting a dirty polluting megaproject on hapless Lower Mainland residents, which will undoubtedly cause health problems & bring deadly risks into the lives of already-stressed BCers.  How grossly unfair..

Clearly, FortisBC don't care!

You must also realize that the EAO has taken steps to ignore clear evidence of project splitting & has accepted unsubstantiated & misleading representations made by FortisBC about the supposed climate benefits of the Jetty.

I implore you to take into account all of the information before you, to arrive at the only decent decision:  for all these reasons, Tilbury LNG (& this Jetty) should be assessed as NOT in the public interest & should be denied all permits.

'Letter to the Editor' on BC's last intact rare Old-Growth Forests

Premier John Horgan's lame announcement on his latest 'Intentions Paper' vis-a-vis his/BC-NDP's 'new paradigm' on BC's precious Old-Growth Forests - which does little to assure forest defenders that these iconic 1,000-year-old forest ecosystems (/C02 sinks/ wildlife habitats) won'T be logged to extinction in 3 years..

Dare I say the issue of whether or not to save BC's old-growth forests should not be the decision of any human(s) putting short-term personal gains ahead of larger considerations, ie. Climate Action/ Nature's revival?

To pretend these are not dilemmas facing govt. leaders today is to deny the overwhelming body of science that has been telling (& showing) us the catastrophic results of our century-long ever-increasing crudely-executed/  heavy-handed 'harvesting' of Nature's once-rich, now-reaped bounty -- of which intact rainforest ecosystems are the 'Lungs' thereof.

Literally, BC's untouched 1,000-year-old primary (unlogged) forests -- of which only approx. 3% remain intact -- are among the world's ONLY climate-balancing wilderness ecosystems left to cover the herculean C02-sinking/ O2-emitting job that once was shared by myriad forests all over the globe..

Having picked Earth almost-dry of its invaluable 'resources' without ensuring their ongoing regeneration ('SOWING WHAT WE REAP'), in the process humans have left behind gluts of toxins/waste that continue to accumulate as long as those inefficient processes are still being used to 'harvest' what we need/use to live!?

It's true:  the systems we've developed/installed -- & now rely on heavily to 'keep us going' -- are the same mechanisms fast-tracking Nature's demise, & thus our own..

But Nature -- yes, still! -- provides everything we need to live!  Doesn't it follow that protecting Nature should be everybody's -- incl. govt. leaders' -- top priority? 

 

Scientists recently issued yet another dire warning that the measurable outcomes of continued reliance on our clunky old wasteful ways include warming temperatures which will lock in further degradation of our life-support system, ie. Nature itself.

Govts cite 'jobs' as a key reason for continuing to permit & subsidize industries with the most devastating impacts on Nature's balance -- of which deforestation is among the worst, not due solely to emissions (which are high when huge old trees release the total C02 they've sequestered over centuries) but also to ensuing LOSS OF FORESTS' COUNTLESS PRICELESS BENEFITS, as our ultimate protectors/safeguards against the harmful human processes endangering whole populations now..

JOBS that work to restore Nature's balance -- in conservation, education, renewable energy, transitioning OUT OF polluting industries etc. -- are what's desperately needed now;  jobs that exacerbate the status quo (GHG emitters like logging, mining..) ALL have imminent expiry dates.

(Widely-known) FACT:  the oldest intact forests ARE what's staving off the worst effects of climate change:  the droughts, famine, fires, floods that threaten mass upheaval on a dime -- brought to the very brink by Big-Biz's last 'all-in' mad pillage for profits (by 'extraction'/ logging/ pollution/ whatever they can get away with) before public pressure forces govts. to shut 'em down..

Thus govt's DELAY on legislating old-school harmful practices OUT before Nature-restoring replacement systems are put IN, could be exactly what tips Nature into irreversible decline..

It only makes pragmatic sense to protect our sole defense against this decline AT ALL COSTS -- along with all the non-human species whose lives depend on keeping these [whole] old forests intact!!?  Without their essential habitats, biodiversity will go extinct -- & guess who will be next.

At this point, the prospect of letting these important ecosystems be cut down is as unthinkable as demolishing the Great pyramids for the price of their stones :  as someone said, it's psychopathic - no matter who is doing the cutting..

@Devon Russell I think the point is to transition to renewable forms of energy since O&G are finite resources. If you believe that O&G are God given resource, why is it only available to the people now and not the people generations from now? Maybe it was intended that people graduate from gas powered vehicles to electric cars - just like how humanity graduate to gas powered cars from the horse and buggy. Even if you don't believe in climate change, Its inevitable that we will run out of oil, at which point we would have to import technology from USA or China. We should get ahead of the curve by creating infrastructure and jobs in the green technology spaces to benefit Canadians so that other countries would rely on us instead of us relying on them.

@zeazi we can still get oil from anything its an natural substance that cant go away just like water but we do have to protect it I agree with the greens with that and I I like how peaceful the greens are and also I think there plans for health care beats any other party's I think all party's has there pros and cons personally I'm more right wing but for bc I'm more for the bc liberal's moderate left if there is a really good moderate green and if they get there party a bit more sorted out with there embers than I will defiantly vote for them I love natural but not everyone believes in climate change but we still care about natural I have friends that are green and for all this and I respect them so in conclusion I wish you and the greens the best and hopefully all party's can work together someday

Dr. Weaver was a credible and influential leader toward a sustainable future because he is a real climate scientist. The Green Party has traded him for a former high school history teacher, whose calm demeanour thinly veils that she is a zealot within the so-called "social justice" movement. Perhaps that's why Weaver now supports the NDP, and Horgan no longer trusts his alliance with them to maintain a stable government. WIDESPREAD EDUCATION that currently only eco-groups (& BCGreens) provide is NECESSARY NOW!!  If it seems  the general public have LESS & LESS SAY & our leaders more & more:, it's NOT cuz we're run by dictators but cuz MOST PEOPLE ARE MISINFORMED & UNMOTIVATED.. & that suits the 'big 3' mining/O&G shills just fine~!!  I'm sad 4 you, as you've clearly no idea how much relentless work & sheer tenacity goes into EACH volunteer-led campaign to influence govt decisions -- you don'T even bother to get involved with change, other than weak-ass armchair advice that makes you sound smart but is based on theories in your head, NOT the actuality of grassroots activism -- WHICH CAN BE FAIRLY EFFECTIVE!  HOW DO I KNOW THIS?  I've been on the frontlines of MANY eco-campaigns.. & never failed to be humbled by the determination & spirit of beautiful BCers fighting for our precious ecosystems,  waterways & wildlife -- it's the ONLY stuff worth fighting for!  And tho we don't always win, when we DO we FEEL the satisfying rewards of ACTIVISM (which belies your "nothing we can do about it" pathos -- THAT's just a cop-out.. & a way of guaranteeing nothing WILL change!?)  When elections happen, it's apparent EVERY TIME that ONLY the BCGreens support the Good Fight -- ie. campaigns to save our rainforest & coastal communities from irresponsible & ruinous C02-belching  industrial projects & same-old govt. "Growth at all costs" BS that continues fast-tracking our demise (C02 = CUMULATIVE!!)  The only shock that sinks my heart each election is HOW FEW PEOPLE HERE --- STILL! -- KNOW the prevailing issues & are WOKEN to the evils brought by 'Corrupt 3' -- Cons, NDP & Liberals.. ALL BCers oughta be campaigning for our kids' healthy, safe futures & storming parliament in droves.. (& VOTING GREEN!!).. Shame's on YOU for dampening all hope -- mine is hard-won & TRIED/ TESTED from personal experience.. which proves MASS ACTION still has the power to wake up politicians to LISTEN.. BELIEVE IT:  YOU are stalling change/progress FAR MORE EFFECTIVELY with your nihilist pessimism than I with my constant rallying cries for better legislation, revisions & systemic overhauls.. Cuz as #COVID has proven, it's MUCH EASIER to urge large #'s of peops to stay home & not work than organizing to STOP THE CALAMITOUS OUTCOME OF EXTINCTION of all life on Earth if we don't ACT NOW ON THE SCIENCE!!!!???  ONE thing's definite:  URGING INACTION won't help one iota to revise politics for the better -- whereas I've SEEN proof that BEING THE CHANGE YOU WANT IN THE WORLD can indeed bring RESULTS:  VOTING GREEN is just ONE WAY BCers could help fast-track those results..

Nelson Guess it makes sense you decide to retreat behind a veil of "you don't know me" & "Have a nice life" -- tho at no point was i presuming to know you personally!?  I was simply responding to your PUBLIC COMMENTS ADDRESSED TO ME (NOT "violently" but maybe passionately?) since you made some BIG SWEEPING ACCUSATIONS -- EG.: "Your false hope STEALS the only hope we have left in all of this" -- why wouldn't i CALL YOU OUT (IN ALL-CAPS, FOR EMPHASIS!!) to BACK UP YOUR  WORDS?  My familiarity with the Greens, along with my firsthand experience as outlined, bely any 'false hope' given!!?  PS. I didn't disagree with aLL you said -- in fact, i acknowledged the CORRUPTION prevalent in our past/present govts,  as well as the need for systemic revisions.. & if you're as 'AWAKE' as you claim & have the solution all figured out, as you imply,  be happy my response gives you the opportunity to ENLIGHTEN US ALL?  As you've called for a "whole new system", why not welcome the chance to explain what you mean?  Otherwise, WHY BOTHER COMMENTING PUBLICLY IN THE 1ST PLACE??

UPDATE 2021:  Only a paltry 17% of BCers voted in last Oct's election, which suited the right-wing fat-cats just fine:  John Horgan won his majority govt. of course, even with such a small turnout.. & has proceeded to fast-track #OldGrowth logging permits (breaking his election promises directly & repeatedly) & reiterated his wholehearted support for polluting boondoggles like Site C Dam/ TMX.. ALL in defiance of the "best science" which he claims to follow:  

(Ya you can be sure his NDP govt is very much to blame for the deepening severity of this year's early fire season AND the worsening climate effects like heat waves that are affecting our communities- & esp our most vulnerable - beyond what COVID19 will EVER do.. & under Horgan's cont'd leadership, it'll only keep getting worse!

AT WHAT POINT will our leaders take stock of their science-led responsibilities to their constituents?  When it's too late for changes to have any effect?

Here's a tip:  DON'T believe a word of what you hear from the Cons, NSP or Liberals: they've proven wholly inadequate to lead us anywhere but off the (burning) cliff, like lemmings..

ONLY the Greens have what it takes - the know-how, the solid respect for science & the fresh convictions/ guts to brings the changes/ measures we desperately need to fulfill a better destiny than the ecocidal, jaded path we've been led to directly by weak-ass leaders who have done ZIP but hone the calamitous, decrepid & FAILING STATUS QUO..
